WHAT IS APL?
The Active Playful Learning (APL) Project is a collaboration between Loudoun County Public Schools, RAND and the University of Virginia. APL is a content-neutral pedagogical approach based on the science of learning. Research has shown that students learn best when they are actively engaged in learning that is meaningful, iterative, social, and joyful. APL draws on these elements to enhance existing curriculum and to foster deeper learning and joyful classrooms.
This project focuses on implementing the APL approach in math, while supporting the existing LCPS math curriculum and VA standards. Through APL teaching practices, teachers help students build mathematical understanding while developing dynamic 21st century skills, including communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creative innovation, content expertise and confidence.

The Active Playful Learning (APL) project aligns closely with the strategic goals of Loudoun County Public Schools. Through professional coaching, APL will support the development of the 6Cs, culturally responsive instruction, deeper learning, student empowerment, staff growth and development, and community engagement.

Our goal is to not only help teachers, schools, and districts provide evidence-based active learning experiences, but to also contribute to a systematic change in mindset about the value of and commitment to providing children the opportunities to learn and grow through active, meaningful, socially interactive, iterative, and joyful experiences.
